This was proven correct when Raul Martinez, of San Antonio, TX, blitzed Victor Proa, of Monterrey, Mexico, at 1.08 of the first round of their battle for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super flyweight title.
Martinez, 26, jumped on Proa from the start. then hung him up on the ropes where he slammed home half-a-dozen power shots before referee Gary Rosato stepped in. The win left Martinez at 24-0, 14 K0s, and on the verge of a world title fight. He weighed 113.5 pounds.
Proa, 23, who came into the fight with a record built against less-than-stellar opposition, falls to 26-1-2, 19 K0s. He weighed 114.5 pounds.
In other bouts on the card: Alexis Camacho, 149 pounds, Austin, TX, K0d Edvan Barros, 146.5, Bahia, Brazil, at 52 seconds of the second round, welterweights. Camacho is 17-1, 16 K0s; Barros 9-6-1, 7 K0s; Teon Kennedy, 122, North Philadelphia, kept his cool while "walking down" elusive Felipe Almanza, 119.5, Lorica, Colombia, over six rounds. They are super bantamweights; Anthony Flores, 132, North Philadelphia, landed a perfect right to the chin of Francisco Palacios, 133, Stamford, CT, to win by knockout at 1.07 of round three, lightweights. Flores is 6-0, 4 K0s; Palacios 4-7-4, 1 K0; Dennis Hasson, 166, Kensington, earned a unanimous six-round decision (60-54, 60-54, 60-54) over Ariel Espinal, 166, Brooklyn, NY, super middleweights. Hasson is 5-0, 2 K0s; Espinal 6-6-2, 2 K0s; Victor Vasquez, 133.5, North Philadelphia, overcame a slow start and K0d Mario Galan, 139, Hollywood, FL, at 1.23 of round two, lightweights. Vasquez is 8-2, 5 K0s; Galan 4-5-1, 3 K0s; heavyweight Faruq Saleem, 257, earned a unanimous six-round decision (58-55, 58-55, 59-54) over game Willie Perryman, 233.5, Clarksdale, MS. Saleem is 38-0, 32 K0s; Perryman 10-17, 7 K0s; former national amateur star Mike Perez, Newark, NJ, scored his second first-round K0 in as many pro fights when he stopped Tommy Garcia, 128.5, Hartford, CT, at 2.40 of the opening round, junior lightweights.
